This is a message from a reader from Eastern Europe. My experience with you and your Chinese colleagues is that getting your translations of hand-picked articles every day feels like a great privilege. In response, there must be things I should do, too.

As a part of giving something back, here are my notes from this reading.

As I was reading the article, these were the my thoughts:

1/3 What are the ways in which this article is significant? I've heard that most Chinese citizens pay little attention to political news stories like this one. What are the reasons we should be paying attention to it?

2/3 From the article: ..... faced with a myriad of old and new challenges, China is now in a critical period for accelerating its reform pace........

When was the last time China was NOT in a critical period for accelerating its reform pace?

3/3 From the article: ..... extra effort is required as China now faces people's ever-growing needs for a better life .....

What makes the needs for a better life 'ever-growing'? And,

How is 'a better life' defined?

Some may think: of course, it's a stupid question. A better life as one with more and better food, clothes, cars, better jobs, a life that is more comfortable. But that is in conflict with the previous statement by Xi Jinping at the forum of Beijing Haidian National Primary School, on May 30, 2014. Then, Xi Jinping stated:

“I’ve heard that there are students who like to compare with each other on

food, clothing, cars, their parents’ job. These are not what we should

compare. “A hard life breeds great talents, whereas an easy life is not the

way to cultivate great men.” “Working hard at a younger age builds the

foundation for a lifelong career, thus you should not waste time in

idleness.” If you’d like to compare, you should focus on hard work, labor,

exercise, and compassion.”
